Aroostook County population declines fastest in Maine
Aroostook County has had the sharpest population decline of any Maine county since the 2010 census, according to detailed population estimates released Thursday.
The latest figures break down an earlier estimate that the state’s population dropped by about 199 people in July 2013, compared with the same month in 2012.
The latest figures show that Aroostook County’s population dropped by 1,816 people from April 2010 to July 2013. It was among 12 Maine counties to lose residents for that period. Cumberland County led population growth, adding 3,780 people since 2010. York County added an estimated 2,300.
Population growth continued to be strong in the last year for Cumberland County, adding 1,616 people, while York’s growth tapered off from 2012 to 2013, adding just 92 residents.
Aroostook County also had the sharpest population decline in the year-ago figures, showing a drop of 734 residents from 2012 to 2013.
In the past year, 12 of Maine’s 16 counties had more deaths than births, according to the census estimates, and 10 counties lost population through migration. Cumberland, Hancock, Knox, Lincoln, Waldo and York counties added residents through domestic migration while the remaining 10 counties lost population to domestic migration.
