A group of Mars Hill residents is suing First Wind, two construction firms and the town over the noise generated by the Massachusetts company's 42-megawatt wind farm.
An attorney for the Aroostook County group told the Bangor Daily News that his clients' quality of life and property values have suffered as a result of the windmills, and said they were not properly notified about the full construction process. First Wind spokesman John Lamontagne said he couldn't comment on the pending suit, but stressed that other residents support the project and said the company followed proper procedures throughout construction of the wind farm, the paper reported.
The 28 turbines in Mars Hill went online in late 2006. First Wind, which also goes by the name Evergreen Wind Power in Maine, also operates a wind farm on Stetson Mountain in northern Washington County and has several other projects in the works. Last week, the Board of Environmental Protection rejected a citizens' group's appeal of the company's plans for a 40-turbine wind project in the Lincoln Lakes region.
