Facing legal action, the out-of-state company that took ownership of the historic Kennebec Arsenal from the state in 2007 has submitted a new redevelopment plan for the property.
The Morning Sentinel reported that developer Tom Niemann's latest plan comes in response to a letter from the office of Maine's attorney general that threatened a lawsuit if Niemann did not produce a redevelopment plan for the state by Oct. 1.
That deadline was extended and the plan, submitted Oct. 22, outlines a redevelopment of five of the arsenal's eight buildings within the next 36 months.
In June, state officials were considering legal action against Niemann for letting the buildings, which he purchased for $1, fall into disrepair.
The buildings that date back to 1828 are designated as National Historic Landmarks and were identified by State Historian Earle Shettleworth as one of the best-preserved antebellum federal military arsenals in the country.
