Kennebunkport hotel developers have reached an agreement to buy the Arundel Barn Playhouse and convert it into a live music venue.
The group, Vinegar Hill LLC, said Thursday that it plans to make renovations over the winter in preparation for opening to the public in June 2016. The sale is expected to close in December. The price wasn’t disclosed.
Two partners of Vinegar Hill, Tim Harrington and Debbie Lennon, are also partners at Kennebunkport Resort Collection, which owns nine hotels and resorts, seven restaurants and several venues in the Kennebunkport area. Harrington is also the developer behind the plan to convert a former Biddeford mill into a hotel and apartment complex
The theater's producer and artistic director, Adrienne Grant, announced the pending sale Nov. 15 in a since-deleted Facebook post on the Arundel Barn Playhouse's page. Grant thanked people who supported the theater over the last 18 years, and said that the new owners plan to "bring another new life to the beautiful, historic Smith Sisters Farm Barn."
Harrington said in a statement Thursday that the group is planning to showcase local, regional and national music acts.
“Although a shift in focus is in store, we want to maintain a strong connection to the original of vision of Adrienne Grant,” Harrington said. “Her pioneering work established high artistic standards and, in the process, put Arundel on the map. It’s a great physical space, and this will remain a fantastic, first-class entertainment venue for the audience. But another important goal is for top-notch artists to have a very memorable and positive experience performing here in Arundel.”
