The town of Ashland has acquired a 94-acre parcel of land and plans to develop it for mixed commercial and industrial use, according to a news release Thursday.
With financing from the Northern Maine Development Corp.’s Revolving Loan Fund, the town purchased the site from members of the Carrier family, the release said. Terms and the exact location were not disclosed.
The Aroostook Partnership and the Ashland Area Economic Development Corp. are assisting the town with marketing the property to potential tenants, and site tours are already underway.
“This project is proof of Ashland’s resilience, strategic planning, and belief in the place they call home,” Paul Towle, president of the Aroostook Partnership, said in the release. “This is the result of years of heartfelt and determined efforts to bring investors, landowners, town councilors, and business owners together to take charge of the community’s economic future.”
Don Tardie, president of the Ashland Area Economic Development Corp., said, “Ashland is in the heart of the wood basket of the great North Maine Woods. We have excellent anchor institutions run by Seven Islands, Irving, Daaquam Lumber, Northeast Pellets, Katahdin Cedar Log Homes, as well as more than 8 million acres of contiguous forests with which to grow our forest-products cluster.
"Our new Ashland Industrial Park will provide access to rail, water, sewer, and three-phase power on our open site for interested investors.”
In another initiative to expand its industrial base, Ashland earlier this year launched a three-year project, funded by the Northern Forest Center and the Forest Opportunity Roadmap coalition, to generate a sales pipeline for structural round timber.
