An Auburn company is tapping into junk removal, considered a significant part of the $55 billion U.S. waste management industry.
Shawn Leone Sr., who runs Leone's Junk Removal in Auburn, got into the business after noticing a junk pickup service out of southern Maine on the roads in Lewiston-Auburn, the Sun Journal reported.
"So I took it upon myself and said, 'If they're up here from South Portland every day of the week, there must be a need for someone locally,'" Leone told the paper.
He’s expanded to property renovation and management as well, operating in Androscoggin, Oxford and Cumberland counties. The work gives him a ground-level view of the housing market, he told the paper.
According to the JDog Junk Removal Franchise website, junk removal is an underserved market segment seeing growing demand consistent with societal consumerism and cultural transience. Total market potential for residential junk removal in the United States could be at least $6 billion annually based upon consumer habits, number of households and estimates of average cost for removal.
