Maine Oxy’s Auburn plant has earned the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program Award in recognition of its rigorous safety achievement program.
As a result of earning the designation, often referred to as SHARP, the worksite will be removed from the federal Occupation Safety and Health Administration’s general scheduled inspection list for two years.
If the company, which provides welding supplies and industrial gases to businesses, continues to meet all conditions of the program, the SHARP designation may be renewed for another two years.
The Auburn location is Maine Oxy’s second SHARP facility, since its Brewer retail facility is already part of the program.
To qualify for SHARP, companies voluntarily undergo a comprehensive safety audit, correct all hazards identified during an onsite health and safety consultation, demonstrate that effective safety and health programs are in place and maintain injury rates below the industry average for the last year of completed data.
Fewer than 2,000 worksites in the United States have earned SHARP certification. This SHARP award brings the total in Maine to 69 worksites.
Maine Commissioner of Labor Jeanne Paquette presented the SHARP certificate and banner to the Auburn facility during a ceremony at the plant today.
