Auburn food sovereignty moves forward
The city of Auburn took another step forward toward food sovereignty, when the city council gave initial approval to an ordinance that would allow Auburn farmers to sell locally grown food directly to consumers without being subject to government oversight or inspections.
The Sun Journal reported the ordinance is expected to provide a new financial outlet for small farms. The move followed the state legislature’s passage of food sovereignty legislation, LD 725, “An Act To Recognize Local Control Regarding Food Systems”
That was signed by Gov. Paul LePage in June. The legislation takes effect in November. Maine is the second state to pass such a law.
Roughly 20 towns across Maine have approved local food sovereignty ordinances, but were working against state law until the legislation was passed.
