Auburn Mfg. head to attend State of the Union

Auburn Manufacturing President Kathie Leonard will attend President Obama’s State of the Union address on Tuesday after receiving an invitation from U.S. Sen. Angus King.

King said he decided to invite Leonard because he wanted Maine’s manufacturing industry represented in anticipation of Obama delivering his own remarks about the industry, according to the Portland Press Herald.

“Manufacturing has always been an engine of economic growth and prosperity, providing good jobs for the middle class in Maine and across the country,” King said in a prepared statement.

“Kathie’s story of hard work, innovation and perseverance is a blueprint for how American producers can compete in an increasingly global marketplace," he continued. "She has managed to keep jobs here in the U.S., and under her steadfast leadership, [Auburn Manufacturing] has proven that manufacturing can thrive in Maine.”

Leonard, who led the textile company’s $1.4 million expansion in 2013, told the newspaper that King has toured her facilities in Mechanic Falls and Auburn since being elected as senator.

She added, “I think he admired [that] we’re a Maine manufacturer, we’re a 100% U.S. manufacturer, we’re a textile manufacturer who has survived and thrived despite all the off-shoring that’s taken place in this country.”
