Auburn Minot Avenue apartment complex groundbreaking is Friday

Construction is set to begin on a 36-unit apartment complex for moderate-income renters on Minot Avenue.
The $6.6 million three-building complex at 477 Minot Ave., being developed by Developers Collaborative, will include 18 one-bedroom units, 10 two-bedroom units, and eight three-bedroom units. It will 32,422 square feet, with 52 parking spaces, and be on 3.86 acres, according to documents filed with the planning board.
The project has been awarded a $110,000 federal Department of Housing and Urban Development Community Development Block grant, and units will be available to households earning 60% area median income or less.
Amenities include a community building with laundry and kitchen facilities, as well as an on-site trail through the woods.
The complex is next to Fairview Elementary School and across the street from Clover Healthcare and Pre-School.
The need for affordable housing in the Auburn-Lewiston area is acute, Richard Whiting, executive director of the Auburn Housing Authority, told Mainebiz in October.
“Waiting lists for our housing programs total over 1,500 applicants,” he said.
477 Minot was designed by Archetype Architects and the contractor is Benchmark Construction. DC Management will manage the property and begin leasing in the summer.
Other firms involved with the project are Stantec, of Scarborough; Haskell Inc., of Falmouth; Summit Geoengineering Services, of Lewiston; Structural Integrity Portland; Bennett Engineering, Freeport.
Benchmark is also the construction firm for the mixed retail-affordable housing building being completed at 62 Spring St. in Auburn.
A ground-breaking ceremony is planned for 9 a.m. Friday, and planned speakers include Mayor Jason Levesque, City Manager Peter Crichton and other city officials and staff.
