August home sales up 15%, prices fall

Home sales in August rose nearly 15% compared to the same month last year, though home prices fell.

A total of 1,090 existing single-family homes were sold last month, a 14.74% increase over August 2010, according to a press release from the Maine Real Estate Information Service Inc. The median sales prices, however, dropped 2.8% to $165,000. Home sales grew the most in Piscataquis County, rising 19% over the year, while sales dropped the most in Lincoln County, falling nearly 19%.

In the Northeast, sales rose 10%, while the median sales price dropped 5.1% to $244,100. Nationally, home sales increased 20%, while the sales price fell 5.4% to $168,400.
