Augusta gives final OK to new hospital

The city of Augusta has approved a new MaineGeneral hospital, and state transportation officials have included partial funding for a new interchange.

The city's planning board voted 5-1 to approve MaineGeneral's final application for the $312 million hospital, according to the Kennebec Journal. The hospital still needs approval from the state's Department of Environmental Protection, expected before the end of the month, and the Army Corps of Engineers. In addition, the Maine Department of Transportation included upgrades to roads leading from I-95 to the hospital and a new roundabout at exit 113 in its two-year, $765 million transportation plan. The state plans to fund 60% of the $11 million project.

The state approved the new hospital in November. However, its proposal to split funding of new I-95 access among the hospital, state and city is still under review by the Department of Health and Human Services. The state's certificate of need approval initially hinged on MaineGeneral being able to secure federal funding for the estimated $11 million project, but efforts to secure that have been unsuccessful so far, MaineGeneral President and CEO Chuck Hays told the paper.
