Augusta to seek housing proposals for former mill site

Augusta City Council expressed informal support Thursday for developing residential units at the city-owned former Statler mill site on the east bank of the Kennebec River.

The Kennebec Journal reported that city councilors were generally favorable to City Manager William Bridgeo’s suggestion that the city put out a request for proposals to see if any developers might be interested in creating housing on part of the mile-long site, which has been renamed Kennebec Lockes.

A formal vote on putting out an RFP would have to be scheduled at a future meeting, the newspaper reported.

In addition to housing, the city has identified a brew pub and a mixed-use retail complex as other potential uses for the city-owned property.
