For the second year in a row, Barnabee the bumblebee will join his summertime pal Steamer at the Yarmouth Clam Festival next month.

Barnabee is the mascot of Norway Savings Bank, which will be a repeat sponsor of a clam-shucking contest on the second day of the weekend event. Steamer the Clam is the mascot of the festival, taking place from July 18-20.

"Just about everyone who has come to the festival, and many who have not, know about the Maine State Clam Shucking Contest,” said Maria Edwards, the bank’s Yarmouth branch manager and a longtime volunteer at the festival.

“It features celebrities, amateurs and professionals competing in different heats to see who can shuck the fastest to earn bragging rights, and the joyous crowds the contest attracts are loud and passionate,” she noted.

What began in 1965 as a local clambake has grown into Maine’s largest free-admission festival, drawing more than 100,000 visitors each year. Food booths are managed by local nonprofits raising funds for community initiatives.

Besides Norway Savings, other sponsors of this year’s clam-shucking contest include Northern Light Mercy Hospital and Hannaford, according to the official schedule.

Admission to the contest is free, and the word on the street is that Barnabee will make a beeline for the shuck-a-thon at the earliest opportunity.

“It’s a thrill to be associated with this contest and the enjoyment it delivers to participants and crowds alike,” said Dan Walsh, president and CEO of Norway Savings Bank. “The Yarmouth Clam Festival’s ability to welcome and offer a fun and memorable experience to over 100,000 visitors is incredibly impressive, and NSB is proud to be among the businesses and organizations who appreciate and celebrate the importance of the festival.”

Norway Savings was ranked No. 7 among the largest Maine-based banks in the 2025 Mainebiz Book of Lists, based on assets as of June 30, 2024.
