Baby boomers, retirees could fill Maine job vacancies, and a business group wants to help

As the state’s employers grapple with a crippling shortage of workers, a new business coalition thinks baby boomers and retired Mainers may be a solution.

Portland Downtown and the Portland Buy Local have partnered with Collective Commitments, Heart at Work Associates and Local Economy Payroll to create the Southern Maine Jobs Collaborative, a program linking retired and semi-retired people with job openings.

The collaborative’s website, mainejobs.theboomerinstitute.com, went live last week and is designed to help employers struggling to fill workforce gaps, according to a news release.

The ideal candidate for the program is a person who is currently in retirement but wants to contribute to the state’s economy as it recovers from the pandemic, the collaborative said.

Job seekers can register on the website without creating a formal resume or other inconveniences of a job search. Registration is free for both the potential employees and employers.

“What’s special about this partnership is the connections between independent business owners and the boomer community,” said Cary Tyson, executive director of Portland Downtown. “Our five organizations are uniquely positioned to connect two groups of people with specific needs that will help each other in this peculiar time.”
