Gov. John Baldacci is trimming more than $10 million from the state's $5.6 billion, two-year budget in order to combat lower-than-expected federal funding.
Baldacci on Friday signed an executive order asking agencies to find $8.8 million in budget cuts and identifying another $1.2 million to be achieved through spending freezes, according to a press release from the governor's office. About $5.6 million is being cut from the Department of Health and Human Services and $1.4 million in the state treasurer's office, while funding for education will remain intact, according to MaineToday Media. Baldacci also directed the Department of Administrative and Financial Services to pursue other spending freezes. Federal legislation passed in August extended $76.2 million in additional Medicaid funding to Maine, short of the anticipated $85 million. Revenues for the first two months of the current fiscal year are above projections by $22.5 million, which is partially attributed to the timing of some payments, according to the release.
The curtailment will stay in effect until the next governor and Legislature develop a supplemental budget, according to the release.
