Baldacci signs historic energy bill

Gov. John Baldacci this morning signed LD 1485 into law, which sets aggressive goals to end Maine's dependence on foreign fuels.

The law establishes the Efficiency Maine Trust and Board, which brings together under one roof Maine's energy rebate, efficiency and conservation programs.

The law also sets goals to:

  • Weatherize all residences and 50% of businesses by 2030
  • Reduce the state's peak electric energy consumption by 100 MW by 2020
  • Reduce the state's consumption of liquid fossil fuels by at least 30% by 2030
  • Build private sector jobs in clean energy businesses
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions

"With this law, Maine will send fewer energy dollars out of the state; we'll reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and we'll create thousands of jobs for Maine workers," Gov. Baldacci said in a prepared statement.
