Ballot set for November

A measure to repeal new tax reforms -- including lower income taxes for thousands of Mainers and an expanded base for sales taxes -- failed to make the Nov. 3 ballot, which was released yesterday by the Secretary of State's office.

The ballot does include a $71 million bond proposal for transportation projects and a proposal to limit state spending known as the Taxpayers Bill of Rights II, or TABOR II. The other questions include a repeal of the same-sex marriage law approved last year; a reduction and exemption of excise taxes related to hybrid vehicles and newer vehicles; a repeal of the school consolidation law passed in 2007; an expansion of Maine's medical marijuana law; and a constitutional amendment to give municipal clerks more time to certify petition signatures, according to the Morning Sentinel.

Backers of the effort to reverse the tax overhaul, which passed the Legislature earlier this year, have until Sept. 11 to gather the 55,087 signatures needed to have the question appear on the June ballot, according to the paper.
