Bangor engineering firm SW Cole enters Rhode Island with latest acquisition

Bangor-based S.W. Cole Engineering Inc. has acquired Geisser Engineering Corp., a Rhode Island firm with clients in that state and in Massachusetts, according to a news release.

Terms were not disclosed. The acquisition marks S.W. Cole’s first formal foray into the Ocean State, although the company has done work there previously.

In a statement, S.W. Cole COO Chad Michaud said “it was only natural” to purchase Geisser, given the Maine company’s past projects in Rhode Island and desire to expand service offerings there.

Geisser's services include engineering and construction testing and inspection work. S.W. Cole offers geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing, and special inspections services.

“Geisser clients can expect to see growth” in services currently offered by S.W. Cole, said Robert Chaput Jr., CEO of the Maine company.

Attempts to reach Geisser for comment were not immediately successful.

Founded 70 years ago, S.W. Cole has acquired numerous companies throughout New England within the past two decades, most recently an engineering firm in Taunton, Mass. The company has offices in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont.

S.W. Cole said it has hired all of Geisser's employees, and now has a total workforce of about 120. The expanded “network of offices and team members throughout New England [will] help efficiently cover our client’s projects,” Chaput said.

Among current projects, S.W. Cole is conducting design and engineering work for a multiuse development in Westbrook that incorporates apartments and a four-story hydroponic greenhouse.

According to the Construction Equipment Guide, S.W. Cole is a subcontractor leading construction oversight on the Maine Department of Transportation’s $44.7 million Hampden Bridge Bundle Project, which is expected to finish rehabilitating and rebuilding numerous bridges before December.

S.W. Cole also worked on a 55-unit affordable rental property for the Portland Housing Authority, which wrapped up construction in late 2020, according to an agency news release.
