Bangor entrepreneur combines cinema and arcade
A new entertainment center that combines cinema and video gaming is set to open in Bangor on July 13.
The Bangor Daily News reported that Joshua Moulton, a former bartender at Blaze Restaurant in Bangor, will open Queen City Cinema Club at 128 Main St., a former gym. His idea combines cinema with the popularity of arcade bars and board game cafes. A six-month reconstruction of the space created two cinemas, which will be rented to customers.
“We’re just providing the venue. The customer provides the movie,” Moulton told the newspaper, adding the concept will work for individuals, local organizations, and things like birthday parties and corporate events. There is also space for video and board games. Gamers can rent the cinemas for large-scale competitive gaming tournaments.
On the Queen City Cinema Club website, Moulton wrote that, while Bangor already has “a fantastic roster of food, beverage, shopping, art, and music options, but other daily entertainment choices are decidedly lacking.” The space is expected to “ ultimately contribute to a more lively and engaging sphere of social interaction, while also promoting the historical appreciation of cinema from around the world and across time.”
The concept adds to a burgeoning downtown Bangor scene. That includes plenty of new-business activity. In December 2017, the Bangor Daily News reported the opening of Jersey's Subs & Sweets; ButterUpCakes, a bakery specializing in gluten-free, dairy-free and sugar-free options; City Drawers, a women's underwear and sleepwear and men's formal-wear boutique; and a gallery called Limited Edition IStudio. Other commercial activity at that time included the December sale of Giacomo's, a downtown Bangor grocery store and café.
ANM Properties has been adding activity to the Nichols Block on Exchange Street. That’s included, the addition last fall of Black Bear Brewing Co., an Orono-based family owned brewery and tap room, opening its second tap room; the Bangor Arts Exchange and Thompson-Hamel, a financial planning and payroll processing firm based in Presque Isle.
