Bangor Gas parent co. activates part of Loring line

The Ohio-based Gas Natural Inc., parent of Bangor Gas Co., announced Thursday it has activated the first 60 miles of its Searsport-to-Limestone Loring Pipeline, a liquid pipeline the company is converting to transport natural gas.

The company said in a press release that activation of the first 60 miles of the pipeline north of Bangor is a milestone for the project, giving it access to the Lincoln region and its anchor tenant Lincoln Paper and Tissue. That mill laid off 200 workers indefinitely in December after a major customer decided to outsource paper production to Indonesia and a recovery boiler exploded, but it continues to run its three tissue-making machines at full capacity.

The mill told the Bangor Daily News in June 2013 that the pipeline will allow the company to save an estimated 4% to 5% on its annual energy costs.
