The city of Bangor is taking applications for a new round of facade grants.

The downtown areas east of Kenduskeag Stream and on the Penobscot River waterfront are eligible. The city has a map of specific areas on its website.

Grants of up to $5,000 are offered, and must be matched by equal or greater investment of private money. The can be used to improve commercial storefronts, including painting, window and door repair or replacement, signs, awnings and storefront restorations.

The deadline to apply is 1 p.m. Oct. 15. Award notifications are expected by April 22.

The money comes through federal Department of Housing and Urban Development Community Block Grant, and city officials said they expect demand to exceed availability, meaning some grants may be for lower than the $5,000 cap.

The objectives of the program are to encourage private investment in downtown, enhance the appearance of the streetscape, reduce vacancies in storefronts and upper floors; expand worker and shopper populations, strengthen or restore the original character of historic buildings and provide a catalyst for others to improve their buildings, signs and awnings.
