Bangor official retires unexpectedly

In an agreement with city councilors reached yesterday, longtime Bangor City Manager Ed Barrett will retire next year.

In a sudden move, Barrett, who has held the position for 22 years, will step down by April 30, 2010, even though he had been under contract through September 2011, according to the Bangor Daily News. The agreement came after an executive session between councilors and Barrett to discuss the position. City councilors told the paper the decision was based on a desire for a new vision for the city, but did not provide specifics on what they wanted that Barrett didn't provide. "We're not unhappy or unpleased with Ed; we're just going in a different direction," council chairman Gerry Palmer told the paper.

Barrett told the paper he had not envisioned ending his tenure in Bangor in this way, and that he was unsure if he would retire or look for other employment. Barrett will stay on as city manager until a replacement is found.
