The Whig & Courier Pub, a popular downtown Bangor restaurant that closed in June, was sold at an auction Wednesday for $355,000.
Dan Sykes of Bangor beat out about a dozen other bidders, offering up a total price of $436,471, which included taxes and almost $25,000 in outstanding debts owed by previous owner Chris Geaghan, according to the Bangor Daily News. The 6,800-square-foot property, which also includes apartments on the upper floors, was assessed at $322,900 this year. Sykes is president of an Internet dating service, Anastasia International, as well as Broadway Properties and D.E.S. Properties LLC, and plans to reopen the restaurant "quickly," he told the paper. Sykes also owns property on Main Street and is president of local building company Elk River Development Co.
Previous owners Chris and Michelle Geaghan announced the restaurant would close in May nearly a year after the couple declared bankruptcy. The couple's request for funding from the city was denied, and Camden National Bank also denied a request for additional financing.
