Bar Harbor's CAT ferry service delayed, again

CAT ferry Courtesy / Bay Ferries Ltd. Bay Ferries Ltd. has delayed resumption of the high-speed CAT ferry service between Bar Harbor and Nova Scotia until late summer, and is refunding tickets for the season.

The long wait for the return of ferry service between Bar Harbor and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, just got a little longer.

Bay Ferries Ltd., the Canadian company that had planned to resume the CAT high-speed ferry service in June and then postponed it until mid-summer, now says the service probably won't begin before "the late summer range."

In a July 15 news release, the company attributes the delays to "continued construction and related approval processes at the Bar Harbor ferry terminal."

Bay Ferries said it will not accept new reservations on the ferry until knowing when the service will begin. The company is offering full ticket refunds to passengers who hold bookings during the planned 2019 season.

Tickets will also be offered for travel aboard another Bay Ferries ship, the Fundy Rose, between Saint John, New Brunswick, and Digby, Nova Scotia.

Bar Harbor began negotiating with Bay Ferries last summer about restarting the ferry service.

Bay Ferries operated the CAT between Bar Harbor and Nova Scotia from 1997 to 2010, but subsequently moved the ferry's Maine berth to Portland. In 2018, the town of Bar Harbor purchased the terminal where the CAT had docked. Bay Ferries indicated it wanted to return the service from Portland to Bar Harbor, and agreed to lease the terminal and pay some of the costs for improving it.

The company began demolition work at the terminal in late winter.
