Battle over Turner Hannaford revived

A couple in Turner is taking their opposition of a proposed Hannaford supermarket to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court.

Philip and Susan Bizier have filed an appeal with the state's highest court over the 36,000-square-foot grocery store approved last March, according to the Sun Journal. Initially, a group of five residents last April appealed the town's approval of the store to the Androscoggin County Superior Court, arguing it was too big for the neighborhood and would cause traffic problems. The county court, however, ruled in favor of the store, saying it was appropriately scaled for the neighborhood. A decision on the appeal will likely take months, according to the paper.

Hannaford Bros. Co. plans to build a store and drive-through pharmacy on a 5.6-acre development on Route 4, behind which nine homes are located. If the store is built, it will be the largest retail store in Turner.
