Baxter Brewing Co. in Lewiston plans to open a 4,800-square-foot taproom this summer in Bates Mill 1A.
The Sun Journal reported the expansion is 10 times its current taproom. Baxter Brewing, established seven years ago, is the third-largest brewer in Maine and was one of the earliest entries into the craft beer market to sell in cans. Founder Luke Livingston told the paper that the expansion will incorporate historic equipment, like turbines, dating back 175 years in the mill’s history. The existing taproom is one of the smallest in the state and has been an issue from the start, Livingston said.
“When we designed the brewery, it was illegal in the state of Maine to sell beer for on-premise consumption,” he said. “Then less than a year after we opened, that law changed. So we did the best we could over the course of the last seven years to retrofit our existing space, but it has never been what it could be.”
The expansion is expected to add new positions.
Livingston was honored by Mainebiz in 2012 as a member of that year’s Next List, recognizing top business leaders who were shaping Maine’s economy.
