The publisher behind one of the largest circulation newspapers in the state of Maine announced on Tuesday that it has acquired the Fort Kent-based news website Fiddlehead Focus, increasing statewide coverage to one of the northernmost points of the state.
The acquisition of Fiddlehead Focus comes on the heels of another pickup Bangor Publishing Co. made in the area. In November, the company obtained the Madawaska-based St. John Valley Times, the weekly newspaper that the Fiddlehead Focus staff would be joining as part of the acquisition.
Fiddlehead Focus was founded six years ago by journalist and photographer Andrew Birden, who has been named general manager of the Bangor Daily News Northeast Publishing in Presque Isle.
“With the Fiddlehead Focus website and the deep roots of the St. John Valley Times, we have the skills, reputation and drive to create an information engine that will promote the interests of all our communities, whether in Maine, Quebec or New Brunswick,” Birden said in a release by the St. John Valley Times.
Todd Benoit, BDN president, said the addition of Birden and his staff to the publication’s roster is a move to increase the coverage of events and breaking news in the area.
“Andrew Birden and his staff at Fiddlehead Focus have done a wonderful job bringing local digital coverage to the St. John Valley, and we’re thrilled that they are becoming part of our team,” Benoit said. “Both Fiddlehead Focus and St. John Valley Times readers can expect to see more coverage of more places and events in the region across both print and the Web.”
