Beleaguered Auburn agency shutting down

An Auburn mental health referral agency that recently had its state license downgraded following a less-than-favorable inspection will close in 30 days.

Attorneys for Possibilities Counseling President Wendy Bergeron Friday issued a 30-day closure notice with the state Department of Health and Human Services, a little more than a week after the department gave the agency a conditional license and a year to rectify deficiencies, including failure to pay therapists and properly secure patient records, according to the Sun Journal. The agency refers about 10,000 clients in the state to 500 affiliate therapists and case managers. Prior to the state's surprise inspection in August, 16 of the agency's 18 staff members walked off the job, and the agency was cited for replacing them with Bergeron's family members and friends who had not been properly trained.

The state will help transition patients to a new agency, according to the paper.
