Bennett: LePage to talk jobs in speech

Gov. Paul LePage’s spokeswoman said the governor’s election-year State of the State Address tonight will include new proposals regarding economic development and fighting drug addiction.

The Bangor Daily News reported that spokeswoman Adrienne Bennett said the governor will also likely return to the topics of welfare reform, curbing Medicaid spending and possibly renew a call for right-to-work legislation, which was rejected by Democratic majorities in the Legislature twice last year.

The paper reported LePage is also expected to cite declining unemployment in the state as a sign his policies, such as cutting state income taxes and creating a hotline for businesses seeking to open or expand, are working. Democratic leaders cast doubt on whether that decline in unemployment represents success, arguing that it remains higher than the prerecession unemployment rate of 4.5% and that homelessness and child poverty remain high.

MPBN will broadcast LePage’s third State of the State Address tonight at 7 p.m. over radio, television and streaming at its website.
