BEP bans BPA in baby food

Maine's Board of Environmental Protection has voted unanimously to ban the chemical bisphenol-A in packaging for baby food and infant formula.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the board vote Thursday now goes to the Legislature for authorization.

The vote follows on an earlier BPA ban approved by the Legislature that required manufacturers to withdraw the chemical from containers of any food products targeted at children age 4 and older by Jan. 1, 2012.

Studies have linked the chemical to various health problems, including developmental and reproductive problems and obesity.

The measure approved by the board Thursday would extend that ban to children age 3 and under, if approved by the Legislature.
