The number of passengers coming in and out of Bangor International Airport rose nearly 7% in 2009.
A total of 372,308 passengers went through BIA last year, a 6.9% increase over 2008's total of 348,407, according to data from the airport. Of the five airlines that operated in Bangor last year, Allegient Air saw the most improvement, with its passenger numbers increasing 42% in 2009. The Las Vegas-based low-cost airline announced in September it was adding twice-weekly nonstop service between Bangor and the Tampa Bay area. Passenger numbers for US Airways increased 29%, while numbers fell for Comair/Delta, Northwest Airlines and Continental Express. In August, Continental pulled out of BIA, ending service to Newark, N.J., while Delta ended its service to Boston's Logan International Airport.
While the airport saw its total military landings fall 20% to 16,267, its international landings increased 26%, from 141 in 2008 to 178 in 2009. In December, the airport landed a new three-year contract with Global Aviation Holdings Inc. to continue serving military flights bringing troops to and from overseas deployments.
Despite strong passenger numbers, the airport saw its heavy-duty international landings fall 14%, and its cargo landings drop 30%, according to the data.
