Bangor city councilors yesterday approved making Irving Oil the new supplier of commercial fuel at Bangor International Airport, among other fuel-related changes.
Irving will replace Exxon Mobil, which had an exclusive contract with BIA for nearly 40 years but said earlier this year it would not renew the contract because of state tax hikes, according to the Bangor Daily News. Exxon will still provide fuel for the airport's general aviation terminal through its subsidiary, Western Petroleum. City officials also approved the creation of an open-access fuel model aimed at saving airline carriers money by allowing them to negotiate their own fuel prices, according to the paper. Carriers can buy their own fuel and store it at the airport for a fee or buy from Irving. City officials agreed to buy Exxon's 13 fuel trucks at BIA for $1.1 million to facilitate the open-access model.
The changes go into effect July 31.
