Biddeford Housing Authority gets $685K grant

The Biddeford Housing Authority is slated to receive a $685,000 grant through the federal Labor Department's YouthBuild program.

The nonprofit organization employs "at risk" young people in jobs building affordable housing, providing job skill training and career counseling. During that time, ranging from six to 24 months, program participants work full-time toward a GED or high school diploma.

U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe announced the award in a press release Wednesday.

Since YouthBuild's founding as a federal program in 1992, around 120,000 students have built 22,000 units of affordable housing in 46 states.
