The Maine Winter Sports Center is ending its financial support of Bigrock Mountain Alpine Ski Area in Mars Hill, which the organization says will need to find community support for the next season.
The nonprofit winter sports center purchased the mountain in 1999 with funds from the Libra Foundation, which has since supported over $6 million in investments at the mountain. Andy Shepard, president and CEO of the organization, said in a press release that the goal at that time was to eventually turn management of the ski area over to a local nonprofit.
MWSC recently completed this type of transition with Rumford’s Black Mountain, which it announced in June it would close. By early July, the ski area had topped its initial $150,000 community fundraising goal to keep it open for the next season.
The winter sports center said similar to Black Mountain, Bigrock lowered the price of its season passes and day tickets last year, to $15, and saw double-digit percentage increases in sales with a 6% boost in revenue.
Bigrock Mountain is the tallest ski area in northern Maine and the Canadian Maritimes, with 980 vertical feet.
