Bill to loosen blue laws gets governor's support

A bill making its way through the Legislature would loosen restrictions on Maine businesses now prohibited from opening on certain holidays.

The Associated Press reported LD 1197 would allow businesses with under 10,000 square feet of selling space to open on Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. The selling restriction on those days, called blue laws, now bar any business with more than 5,000 square feet from selling on those holidays.

The bill gained support from Gov. Paul LePage and the state's Department of Economic and Community Development during hearings Wednesday and will undergo further review by the state's Labor, Commerce, Research Economic Development committee.
