Two bills in the congressional pipeline would allow the free transfer of Brunswick Naval Air Station property to the community redevelopment authority.
U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, who sits on the House Armed Services Committee, was able to get the provision allowing the no-cost transfer into the Defense Authorization Act, which was debated yesterday and is expected to pass the House later tonight or tomorrow, according to a release from the congresswoman's office. A similar bill sponsored by Sen. Olympia Snowe, is making its way through the U.S. Senate.
Without the provision for a free transfer, the Navy would be obligated to seek a fair market price for the 3,200-acre property, estimated between $20 million and $30 million by Steve Levesque, executive director of Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority, the agency that would receive the property, according to The Forecaster.
Both bills have to be reconciled in committee if they pass their respective chambers, according to the newspaper.
