Biocoal project clears last regulatory hurdle

The region's first torrefied wood facility cleared its last regulatory hurdle this week, paving the way for construction to begin on the $48 million Millinocket facility.

The Bangor Daily News reports that Thermogen Industries LLC has received final approval for construction of the facility from the state's Department of Environmental Protection.

The company began hiring for the project earlier this month. It expects to open the facility in the fall of 2013 and use around 240,000 to 250,000 tons of wood waste to produce torrefied wood that has a market as a fuel source in Europe and the United Kingdom.

In December 2011, Thermogen's parent company, Cate Street Capital, purchased American rights to the technology — also known as "biocoal" — for $20 million.
