The Navy on Wednesday awarded defense contractor Bath Iron Works a contract modification worth nearly $39 million for ongoing design and engineering work on the Navy's latest line of destroyers.
The contract will require BIW to provide technical and engineering support in the construction and maintenance of the Zumwalt class destroyers, or DDG-1000 design.
Earlier this month, the shipyard was awarded the design contract at $26 million for work between now and March on the new class of Navy destroyers.
The first three of the Navy's Zumwalt-class destroyers will be built in Bath, with the first ship in that class scheduled for completion in 2015. In early September 2011, the company received a $2 billion contract for the second and third ships in the new class.
In June, the Bath defense contractor was awarded a $66 million contract for maintenance and modernization work on the Navy's previous Arleigh Burke-class of destroyers. This time last year, BIW received a $680 million contract for an Arleigh Burke-class ship and in February of this year won a $663 million contract to build another.
