BIW lays off another 41

Bath Iron Works is laying off another 41 employees because of an expected work shortage as the shipyard transitions to building the next generation of Navy destroyers.

The Bath shipyard will lay off 16 pipefitters and 25 welders on July 2, according to the Associated Press. The shipyard laid off 67 employees on June 1 and another 58 on June 5. Jim DeMartini, BIW's spokesman, told Mainebiz all the layoffs are considered temporary.

Once construction on the first DDG 1000 destroyer ramps up this fall, there will be a sustained workload for several years, BIW President Jeff Geiger told employees in a memo released earlier this month.
