Bath Iron Works is working with a natural gas company to bring a pipeline to its shipyard in an effort to reduce fuel costs and its carbon footprint.
The shipyard has reached an agreement with Brunswick-based Maine Natural Gas Corp. to extend its existing pipeline in Brunswick to Bath by the end of the year, according to The Times Record. BIW President Jeff Geiger said in a memo to BIW employees that switching from oil to natural gas will shave its fuel costs, shield it from oil-price fluctuations and reduce the shipyard's carbon footprint "by approximately one-third." It could also benefit the rest of the Bath community by allowing other businesses and residents to use natural gas. BIW currently uses natural gas at its facilities in Brunswick. No information on the cost of the pipeline to BIW was released.
Maine Natural Gas Corp. currently has infrastructure in the Brunswick and Topsham area as well as Gorham and Windham. Vice President Darrel Quimby told the paper that the company plans to first extend its pipeline to service BIW before exploring other interests in Bath.
