BIW to lay off 130 people

Bath Iron Works today announced it will lay off about 130 workers before the end of the month.

BIW President Jeff Geiger said the layoffs, effective Jan. 21, are due to an anticipated slowdown in design work for the Navy's new destroyer class, DDG 1000, now that a majority of that work has been completed, according to the Bangor Daily News. The shipyard has been working to develop other design and engineering opportunities, allowing it "to reduce the total number of employees affected" by the cuts. Geiger also cited the Navy's current budget pressures and BIW's need to "remain affordable and poised to compete and win future contracts." BIW is slated to build all three ships in the DDG 1000 class.

Both union and non-union employees will be laid off, the paper reported. Following the layoffs, the shipyard will employ 5,700 people.
