BIW wins $34M Navy contract

Bath Iron Works has received a nearly $34 million contract modification from the U.S. Navy that will fund additional work in the DDG 51-class destroyer program.

The $33.66 million contract will fund technical assistance at BIW related to detailed design of the DDG 51 destroyer, according to a press release from U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, a member of the Senate Armed Services and Appropriations committees. BIW has been the lead contractor for the DDG 51 destroyer since its inception 20 years ago, a class the Department of Defense planned to end but decided last year to restart. BIW is also slated to build all three ships in a new DDG-1000 class.

The work is expected to be completed by September 2011.
