Bixby & Co. launches chocolate puffin line to support Audubon conservation efforts

Courtesy Bixby & Co. Bixby & Co., of Rockland, has launched a line of chocolate puffins in partnership with The National Audubon Society's Project Puffin.

Bixby & Co. LLC, an organic chocolate-bar maker launched by Kate McAleer and her mother Donna McAleer in 2011, has branched out into puffins — in chocolate, that is.

The company, founded in 2014 and based in Rockland, launched the product line in partnership with The National Audubon Society’s Project Puffin.

The items, sold online and at the manufacturer’s retail store at One Sea St. Place in Rockland, come in three-dimensional figurines for $15, flat bars for $9 and animal-shaped chocolate lollipops for $3.

Proceeds will be used to support Project Puffin, which has restored colonies of the unique-looking seabirds, with black and white with orange beaks and webbed feet, on Maine’s midcoast over the past 40-plus years.

Project Puffin has a year-round staff of seven which increases to about 50 during the seabird breeding season in spring and summer, including interns and volunteers, according to the organization’s web site.

Project Puffin is based in Ithaca, New York, at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the Todd Wildlife Sanctuary, Bremen on mid-coast Maine. It is part of the Science

Division of the National Audubon Society and runs puffin-watching cruises for avian and photography buffs.

“The puffins are simply breathtaking and adorable to see in the wild,” Kate McAleer said in a news release announcing the partnership. “As a proud sponsor of Project Puffin, we help support the vital conservation work of the National Audubon Society to protect birds and the places they need, today and tomorrow.”
