Biz community urges regulatory changes

The state should streamline its regulatory process and change its perception in the business community, business representatives told a governor's advisory board yesterday.

At a meeting of the Regulatory Fairness Board, business representatives urged a faster application process for businesses looking to locate in Maine, according to Maine Public Broadcasting Network. Matt Jacobson, president of Maine and Co., a business attraction company in Portland, told the board that Maine must be able to issue permits within 30 days of an application, instead of weeks or years, in order to compete with other states.

Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce Senior Vice President Chris Hall told the board that businesses' fearful attitude towards state regulators creates a "hostile" business environment in the state, a view seconded by David Clough of the Maine chapter of the National Federation of Independent Business, the Kennebec Journal reported. Hall recommended the next governor establish an office dedicated to streamlining the regulatory process.

The advisory board is expected to make recommendations on the regulatory process to the governor and the Legislature in February, according to MPBN.
