Blethen, union postpone arbitration

Blethen Maine Newspapers and the Portland Newspaper Guild have postponed an upcoming arbitration meeting to give a prospective buyer of the newspaper company time to line up financing.

The arbitration stems from a lawsuit the newspaper company filed last June against the union. The lawsuit is over a contractual dispute over whether a buyer of the newspaper company would have to honor its contract with the union.

Maine Media Investments has since stepped forward as a prospective buyer of the company. It initially hoped to close the deal by the end of 2008, but that deadline has been extended by 30 days. Both the Portland Newspaper Guild and Blethen yesterday announced their intention to postpone the arbitration hearing pending the outcome of the potential sale, according to the Portland Press Herald.
