Sandford "Sandy" Blitz of Hudson has been nominated as the federal co-chair for the newly created Northern Border Regional Commission, which is charged with investing in the economic development of the most distressed areas of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and parts of upstate New York.
The NBRC, created by legislation authored by U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud and passed into law last year, was appropriated $1.5 million, according to a release from Michaud. Blitz's nomination must be confirmed by the Senate.
"I have worked with Sandy Blitz for years," said Michaud in the statement. "He knows the region and the challenges faced by each of the states in this commission. His regional knowledge and his expertise in economic development will serve Maine and the entire region extremely well. He is an outstanding pick by the president."
Blitz launched Emesbee Associates in 1996, a consulting firm that helps public and private entities find government grants and loans, and has served on the Governmental Affairs Committee for the Greater Bangor Regional Chamber of Commerce since 2001. He's served as executive manager of the Bangor Target Area Development Corp. and adjunct assistant professor at the University of Maine's Department of Public Administration. In 2007, he was named U.S. Small Business Administration's regional administrator for New England.
