B&ML excursion train assets sold

The last remaining assets of the former Belfast & Moosehead Lake Railroad, including train station property in Unity, have been sold.

The Belfast & Moosehead Lake Railroad Preservation Society announced in February 2008 it would cease operating the tourist excursion train from Belfast to Burnham and sell the railroad's assets, citing declining ridership and lack of financial support. The group recently sold its dozen remaining locomotives and passenger cars to Rail Events Inc., a subsidiary of The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad, which will move the pieces to North Carolina for maintenance before putting them to use in excursion trains, the Herald Gazette reported.

The four-acre station property in Unity was sold to REL Development of South China, of which Robert LaMontagne, former president of Unity Property Management, is a principal. Unity Property Management is a subsidiary of the Unity Foundation, which acquired the railroad's train station and rolling stock in 1995 to run the former freight line as a tourist attraction. When the foundation opted to unload the assets in 2005, one of its employees formed the preservation society. LaMontagne left Unity Property in December, and was not available to specify what he planned to do with the train station property, according to the paper.
