BNAS closure marks another milestone

The impending closure of the Brunswick Naval Air Station moved closer to reality this week.

Yesterday, both the galley, which served meals to civilians and military personnel on the base, and the health clinic closed their doors, according to news channel WCSH 6. And on Tuesday, Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing 5 held an official disestablishment ceremony, signaling the end of the unit, according to The Times Record. Wing 5 made up the bulk of the base's personnel since it located in Brunswick in 1974. All of its squadrons had previously left the base and relocated to Jacksonville, Fla., where they will function under the command of Wing 11, according to the paper.

The number of personnel at BNAS over the past two years has dropped from more than 4,000 to 400. The base officially closes next spring.
