A 19th-century sea captain’s home, with panoramic harbor views from the highest spot in Boothbay Harbor, was named the No. 1 small hotel in the U.S. by Tripadvisor, the world’s largest travel website.
The Topside Inn, at 60 McKown St., is a “sea captain's home turned-chic coastal retreat” that's noted for its water views, perennial gardens and quiet places to relax on four private acres while still being walking distance to the town’s stores and restaurants.
The 22-room inn, which features a bar and offers gourmet breakfast, is owned by Mark Osborn and Brian “Buzz” Makarewicz, who were named Innkeepers of the Year for 2020 by industry trade group HospitalityMaine.
Topside Inn did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
The rankings from Tripadvisor put the Topside Inn in rarefied company with other honorees, such as the celebrity favorite, the Mark Hotel in New York City, which was named No. 1 among all hotels in the country.
Elsewhere in New England, Candleberry Inn on Cape Cod was ranked the top bed-and-breakfast.
For the best in the world, Tripadvisor singled out the White House Hotel Istanbul as the No. 1 small hotel and the Tulemar Bungalows & Villas in Costa Rica, a jungle resort perched on a hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean, was named the No. 1 hotel worldwide.
Now in the 20th year of the Travelers' Choice Awards for Hotels, the awards are based on the traveler reviews and ratings posted on Tripadvisor throughout 2021.
“Despite another year of ups and downs, people still vacationed around the world, embracing a post-pandemic travel renaissance spurred by high vaccination rates. From returning to their favorite, trusted hotel, to adventurous journeys to new resorts across the world, people found ways to prioritize travel, and returned the favor by leaving reviews of their stay. The Travelers' Choice Awards recognize the hotels they loved most,” Tripadvisor said.
While millions of hotels are listed on Tripadvisor around the world, less than 1% were named the Best of the Best.
Tripadvisor Inc. (Nasdaq: TRIP) was founded in 2000 and is headquartered in Needham, Mass.
